SIOP vs. Traditional lesson planning
The Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) model offers many benefits and approaches for helping ESL students that a tradition lesson plan may not provide. Research states that “SIOP is a validated instructional model that has been proven to be effective for ESL students and their academic needs” (CAL.org). This model provides components of lesson preparation, building background, comprehensible input, strategies, interaction, practice, lesson delivery, and review/assessment.
Traditional lesson plans have benefits of its own, but may not necessarily be helpful for the ESL student population. However, the SIOP model connects to both ESL students and non ESL students. The number of ESL students has been increasing in the United States and the SIOP model has been increasing academic performance for English learners. Another benefit that SIOP provides unlike a tradition lesson plan, is that it includes learning content for the use of two-way immersion programs.
